Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs have become the standard method to draft all types of plans, from a home floor layout to an RC model airplane plan design. The old method of preparing plans that was used for centuries - hand drawn lines and diagrams on a sheet of paper - has been supplanted by the quicker and far easier method of using your computer for these drafting tasks.

TurboCAD is a powerful and affordable consumer CAD computer program that is ideally suited for drafting model RC plane plans. TurboCAD’s intuitive design and clear interface makes it ideal for the home user. However, there are several useful tips and techniques which provide very useful insights on how TurboCAD works. I have captured these learning points in an easy to understand series of video tutorials on TurboCAD training for RC plane plans. This TurboCAD training CD for RC plane plans will be available here no later than March 15, 2010. Please see the sample video below for an introduction on what to expect with this training CD:

Many CAD programs contain literally dozens of features to permit employment in a wide variety of drafting tasks. For TurboCAD training for an RC plane plan, we can focus on just those drafting tasks needed to draw your typical full size RC model airplane plan. For model airplane plans, we do not need to initially worry about tracing over an imported file, three dimensional diagrams or preparing some of the more complex drafting shapes.

For TurboCAD training for an RC plane plan, we need to understand how TurboCAD uses the two dimensional drawing tools of a line, circle and curve. These are the basic drafting tasks needed on any RC model airplane plan. In addition, a model airplane is typically built directly over a full size plane plan. Thus, there is no need in a TurboCAD training course for RC plane plans to have an extensive discussion on CAD dimensions. Rather, we just need to understand how to employ text leaders to describe unique features of the TurboCAD RC plane plan.

Armed with this knowledge, we can narrow the learning tasks needed to master TurboCAD training for RC plane plans. TurboCAD has features that allow precision with drafting tasks, such as snap, grids and the ability to trim lines and shapes. These capabilities are essential to employing TurboCAD training for RC plane plans, and are fully explained in the TurboCAD CD training videos. Concepts such as trim, snap and mirror are not intuitive to the new user of TurboCAD, but make complete sense once they are explained and demonstrated in the training videos. The TurboCAD training CD for RC plane plans contains 90 minutes of discussion, explanation and demonstration of TurboCAD features aimed on producing professional RC plane plans.
TurboCAD training chapters include an overview of the TurboCAD drafting environment; floating toolbars; basics of snap, trim and mirror commands; drawing basic shapes; use of an airplane frame to start a model design; adding model airplane structure; drawing full size RC airplane components such as motors and servos; use of construction lines; CAD drafting of formers and ribs; adding text leaders; and preparing for the final printing. At the conclusion of this TurboCAD CD video training course, you will be well prepared to draft your very own RC model airplane plan.

In the course of the TurboCAD training CD, I will take you step by step through a complete design an RC model airplane. Or to be more precise, I will take my existing RC airplane plan of the Yard Ace (published in the September 2008 Quiet and Electric Flight International magazine) and “redesign” it. I will name this new model airplane design the Snapper. The Snapper RC model airplane plan will use the same general dimensions as the Yard Ace, but will change from a high wing to a low wing design, and employ a wider fuselage, greater wingspan and lighter weight. At the end of the TurboCAD training for RC plane plan tutorial videos, you will see a complete RC airplane CAD plan drawn from a blank sheet to a finished design. As an added bonus, the finished plan of the Snapper will be included on the TurboCAD training CD, as well as a FREE download from this web page. Just like the Yard Ace, the Snapper will be a great model airplane for park flying, as well as indoor flight in larger venues. And, the complete CAD plan will be available to you for free. Completion date of the TurboCAD training CDs is March 6, 2010.
