Flying the Havoc Razor

Once you have a suitable flying area established - enough space and calm air for this indoor RC helicopter - it’s time for your test flights.  The first step is to trim (or adjust) your Razor indoor RC helicopter such that in a hover, with no application of the direction stick, the Havoc Razor indoor RC helicopter does not turn or spin in either direction.

Hovering the Havoc Razor indoor RC helicopter is over half the battle of learning to fly this great little machine, and hovering is not hard at all.  The throttle stick, on the left side of the controller, is spring loaded to the down (or throttle off) position.  Throttle control is the key to a good hover.  Ensure that the battery in your Razor radio control helicopter is fully charged.  Turn on the receiver switch in the belly of the Razor indoor RC helicopter, and then turn on the controller.  You will see a bright red light in the cockpit of the Havoc signaling that the electronics are on.

The Havoc Razor indoor RC helicopter has just two controls; throttle (for altitude) and turn.  A full control indoor RC helicopter would have four channels of control, to allow for precise maneuvers such as a stationary hover.  The two channel control arrangement for the Razor indoor RC helicopter makes for a simpler installation and much faster learning experience.  However, you will not have the precise positioning capability of a four channel indoor RC helicopter.  This really should not be taken as any sort of criticism.  The Havoc Razor indoor RC helicopter is fully under control with its two channels, but rather in a different manner, with a series of small turns to direct the flight path.  You will quickly find the Razor indoor RC helicopter flies just where you want it to go.  In short, “try it, you’ll like it.”

First Steps in Flying the Razor

The first step in learning the fly the Razor indoor RC helicopter is a test hover to adjust the trim (left/right rocker switch directly under the direction stick), preventing the indoor RC helicopter from turning left or right with the direction stick centered.  Gently push the throttle stick up, to increase the speed of the rotor.  The Razor will lift off.  Adjust the throttle to keep the indoor RC helicopter as close to level flight as possible.  This will be a bit tough during your first few hops.  The key is to concentrate on the helicopter in flight, and not look at the controller.  The throttle control does a very good job, and there is a very good feeling of “connection” to the flying indoor RC helicopter.

The Razor hovers well for a two channel helicopter

Once in a stable, level hover, the Razor will likely be slowly turning left or right.  This is the time to adjust the trim until all turning is stopped.  Per the directions, use left trim to stop a clockwise turn, and right trim for a left (or counter-clockwise) turn.   This trimming must be done again every time you turn on the controller.

Once trimmed out, the flying fun with this indoor RC helicopter begins.   Put the Razor on a smooth surface, as an uneven surface will affect takeoff performance.  Slowly increase the throttle, while concentrating on the indoor RC helicopter, and don’t look at the controller.  Gentle throttle control is the key.  Learn to watch the Razor, and think ahead to where it is headed.  For example, if you take off with too much throttle, the Razor indoor RC helicopter will quickly accelerate upwards.  After you see this a few times, you will instinctively anticipate and catch it, and apply a small throttle reduction to maintain your desired flight path.

Learn to Turn the Razor

The Havoc Razor indoor RC helicopter turns very well, in a positive manner, with the direction stick.  You will quickly learn to modulate the throttle to control altitude as you turn, and the Razor can truly turn on a dime.  Turning to the left will slow down the Razor indoor RC helicopter, and turning to the right will allow the Razor to speed up. With the very precise throttle and turning controls, you have a great feel for your altitude and prompt inputs for all turns.  It’s just a matter of practicing these new skills to quickly reach a level of very practical flight, as shown in the video.

Summary

In summary, you really can’t go wrong with this well built, ready to fly indoor RC helicopter.  Learning to fly with the two channel setup is a breeze, and you will quickly want to share this great indoor RC helicopter experience with your friends.
