Alan's Blackburn, built with a 36 inch wingspan:

Alan (from Austin, Texas) purchased a set of 1912 Blackburn RC plane plans, and decided to build a Blackburn with a smaller with a wingspan of 36 inches, rather than the 44 inches on the plans. This is very easy to do, as you can just adjust the size of the enlargement of the model plane plans.

Allow me to let Alan continue with his comments on the 1912 Blackburn plane RC model:

“The plans show the two servos behind the cockpit. Mine are in the cockpit which is the farthest forward that I can put them. Although the completed model weighs just a tad over nine ounces ready to fly I had to put a small amount of lead under the cowl.

I haven’t flown it yet, hope to do so soon. If it works out OK I may build a bigger one. At the size I built it the fuselage interior is very small.

I didn’t use the three part rib design I converted those to a one piece rib, with the spar holes drilled before the ribs are cut out, a much easier method IMHO.

The front spar is a K & B alloy tube and the rear spar is carbon fiber. Rudder is pull/pull, and the wings are detachable, held in place by the rigging (not fitted when I took the photos.)

Here is my set-up:

Motor: Turnigy 2404-14T outrunner
Esc: Turnigy Plush 6a
Battery: Rhino 360 2c
Servos: (2) Turnigy TG-9
Transmitter: Futaba 9 CAP Super with a Corona 2.4 module
Receiver: Corona 2.4 4 channel Receiver
Prop: GWS 0843”

Alan, all I can say is “great job” with your version of the Blackburn from RC airplane plans! Your smaller version came out just right. And I agree, there is not much room inside the fuselage, due to the unique triangular section of the Blackburn. Your weight of nine ounces came out about right.

Very good idea with using the single rib, with spar holes drilled in. I’ll use that technique in the future on my RC plane plans.
